Event Description:

Many students present as good candidates for speech generating devices (SGD), which is one form of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC).  This presentation will discuss the essential pre-requisite communication and motor skills for students with autism to be successful SGD users.  Instructional techniques on how to teach these readiness skills will also be covered.  The presentation will include video examples of students working on the skills that will promote independent SGD use and charted performance data.

Target Audience:  parents, educators, speech therapists, behavior analysts

Presentation Objectives

By the end of this workshop, participants will be able to:

(1) identify prerequisite motor (visual) skills and how to teach the motor skills
(2) identify prerequisite communication skills and how to teach them
(3) identify prerequisite academic skills and how to teach them
(4) auditory prerequisite processing skills and how to teach them
