Helping Adolescents and Young Adults with High Functioning Autism or Asperger's Syndrome Understand and Cope with Their Emotions
Event Description:
Individuals with Asperger’s Syndrome and HFA often have difficulty identifying, expressing, and coping with their emotions. They may know they are feeling SOMETHING, but can’t quite identify what it is. As a mental health counselor who has worked extensively with people on the spectrum, Elaine knows first-hand that they are not without emotions, but rather have difficulty accessing and labeling them. They are often confused by them, and don’t know quite what to do with them.
In this workshop, Elaine will share some techniques that she has used in her practice working with teens and adults on the spectrum. These techniques will enable you to teach your loved one or client how to identify and express his or her emotions before they become out of control..
Target Audience: parents, counselors, educators, speech therapists, occupational therapists
Presentation Objectives
By the end of this workshop, participants will gain:
1. an understanding of why individuals on the spectrum go from “zero to ten” when expressing emotion.
2. the ability to identify when your loved one/client needs some help clarifying his or her emotions.
3. the ability to help loved ones and/or clients identify what emotion(s) he or she is feeling at a given time.
4. the ability to give loved ones and/or clients some tools to use to express his or her emotions before they become unmanageable.
