Educational Background: I graduated from Western Washington University in 2008 with a B.A. in Communications Sciences and Disorders (Speech Pathology and Audiology). I have my A.A. from Edmonds Community College in 2006. I am planing on applying to The University of Washington's Special Education Graduate Program for Fall of 2011.
Relevant Professional or Work Experience: While I was attending Western, I worked as a care-giver through the Department of Developmental Disabilities-DSHS in Bellingham for a 12 year old boy who was on the Autism Spectrum and had other special needs. The summer after I graduated college I worked for F.A.C.E.S. Northwest, a summer program for children with Autism. It was developed to work on IEP goals from the previous school year and to promote social interaction for these children and teens in the community. In my classroom of 18-23 month olds that I work with at The Goddard School, I had a child that was on the Autism Spectrum. I had the opportunity to work with a Special Needs Education Coordinator to ensure sucess for that child in my classroom.
Relevant Personal Characteristics: I have a passion for working with children, especially birth to three. I have developed patience through my work with children with special needs. As a preschool teacher I interact with parents on a daily basis and I look forward to answering questions from them and providing their children with excellent care and nurturing.

Educational Background: I am a former elementary school teacher. I gave up my career to work with my son who had an initial diagnosis of autism. We used ABA extensively for the first 6 years of his therapy. I would be excited to refresh my ABA skills and use what I've learned to work with children using this method.
Relevant Professional or Work Experience: Teacher K-8, ABA therapy with my own son, Informal tutoring with other children
Relevant Personal Characteristics: As a former teacher, I have learned that in the end the blessing is all mine. The qualities needed to effectively work with special needs kids in my experience are the same qualities that any educational work with children requires. Patience, encouragement, consistency, energy, gentleness, clarity...I suppose the list could go on and on. I am excited at the prospect working with kids again :)
